Abstract

In the research of character recognition, the role of database of patterns is essential. In using a large sized database, two aspects must be considered One is the problem of implementing a low cost file system. A CD-ROM will be a solution to this problem. The other is efficient retrieval of interesting patterns from the large database. In this paper, an experimental system for pattern retrieval is proposed. This system consists of a workstation, a CD-ROM device and a software package for pattern retrieval, is proposed. An experimental sheet of handwritten Japanese character patterns is supplied to the system in the form of a CD-ROM disk. The system supplies several accessing facets; a radical decomposition one, one using extracted features, one using the result of a recognition experiment or one using informations on resembling character groups.
